Talks soon on wage board award for journalists: Sherry

ISLAMABAD: The government will soon arrange tripartite talks to finalise the wage board award for journalists, Federal Information Minister Sherry Rehman said on Thursday.

She made the remarks after the reporters covering the National Assembly (NA) session walked out of the press gallery in protest against attacks on cameramen in Karachi.

“The new government will arrange a tripartite meeting of representatives of journalists, newspaper owners and the government to resolve the issue,” the minister told the House.

She claimed it was the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government that had given first wage board award to journalists, adding that the new government would try its best to implement the Seventh Wage Board Award.

Bill: Rehman also proposed a Journalists’ Victim Fund to compensate the families of journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty. She said that a bill to lift restrictions the previous government had imposed on the media would be tabled in the running NA session.

She said the government would ask the NA speaker to form a bi-partisan committee of House members to look after the affairs of the press gallery inside the assembly.

She said the government had accepted journalists’ demand to hold an inquiry into attacks on them during riots in Karachi.
