Strike call withdrawn

KARACHI, April 3: The Pakistan Film Exhibitors Association has withdrawn its call for a week-long strike which was scheduled to begin on Thursday after its leadership received assurances from some top government officials promising that their demands would be met.

“Some top government officials have contacted me and our colleagues in the northern region (Punjab and NWFP) requesting for withdrawing our decision to shut the business for a week and promising they would get our demands met,” Nadeem Mandviwala, chairman of the PFEA (South) told Dawn.

According to him, his counterpart in the northern region told him that Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi had contacted the former and requested to withdraw the strike call.

“Besides, the federal minister and secretary for culture have also promised to accept our demands,” said Mr Mandviwala.

After such developments, he said, the PFEA (South) held a meeting in Karachi in which they decided to withdraw the call.
