The Sindh chief minister has decided to establish the Business Climate Unit (BCU) in the Sindh Planning and Development Department to simplify official procedures for the business community, according to a press statement issued on Thursday.

He took this decision while holding a meeting with a World Bank delegation lead by its country chief Illango Patchamuthu at the CM House. The chief minister was assisted by additional chief secretary (Dev) M Waseem, principal secretary Naveed Kamran Baloch, investment board director Azeem Uqauili and others.

Patchamuthu said an effective plan should be proposed to attract new investors and flourish the ongoing business activities.

He said the Sindh government should develop a unit where facilities could be offered to investors and a new climate be developed for enhancing performance of the government.

On this, the chief minister announced the establishment of the BCU in the P&D department.

“I will personally chair the unit and will be monitoring its working and performance,” he said.

“Through this unit, we would simplify the procedure and process with the aim to reduce time, number of procedures and cost involved in the business indicators such as dealing with construction permits, paying taxes and registering property,” the chief minister added.

Under the construction permits, the unit would ensure health and safety standards, he said.

“Natural disasters such as massive earthquakes in recent years are reminder of the importance of having structurally sound buildings,” he said, adding that engineering flaws, inappropriate materials and lack of sound building practices would not be tolerated.

He directed additional chief secretary (Dev) Mohammad Waseem to prepare a detailed plan for the unit, saying the World Bank experts would also assist him if needed.
