Sindh Advisor justifies ban on TV channels

KARACHI: Advisor on Information and Archives to the Sindh Chief Minster Maj (Retd) Hamid Hussain Abdi has said that the ban on some news TV channel was justified, as they were misleading the nation.

Addressing a press conference in his office on Saturday, he said that some TV channels were allowed to relay their transmissions after negotiations with the government and that aggressive TV news channels would not be allowed unless they agreed to follow the code of conduct. He regretted that there was no change in the attitude of these channels even after the ban.

To question as to why foreign news channels such as CNN and BBC were off air, the Advisor said they too were telecasting footage of channels such as GEO and ARY OneWorld. He added that even in the “civilized world”, TV channels did not telecast images of bodies and limbs, but Pakistani news channels were doing this.

He said that the government was ready to negotiate with the management of TV channels and some of them were allowed to go on air after successful negotiations with the Sindh governor.

To a question about the raid on Daily Awam’s Karachi printing press, the Advisor said no raid was conducted. He said if the government had wanted to seal it, it could at any time as the Daily Awam has shifted its printing press from I I Chundrigar Road to Sultan Abad without official permission.

The Advisor said that some TV channels deserved the ban but there was no such ban on the press, hence their protest was regrettable. On Monday, we got a tip-off that Daily Awam wanted to print supplements after each two hours, which could have created panic among the people of Karachi, he said.

Sindh Director Administration and Press Iqbal Mirza said that he along with Director Research and Reference Aziz Memon, a police inspector, a policeman and driver went to the Daily Awam’s printing press and politely advised them not to publish so many supplements. He said that was only thing they did, which was exploited by the media and described as a raid. ppi
