After releasing two out of four parts of Shattering The Silence series, SOC Films, which is spearheaded by two-time Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, recently launched the third animated short from the series.

Shattering the Silence is a public awareness campaign that aims to create meaningful dialogue around issues of child abuse.

According to the press statement, the third part, titled Child Marriage, is told through the eyes of a young girl, and follows the story of Mina, a child who is pulled out of school and married off at a young age. The short film highlights the physical and mental toll that an early marriage can have on a child bride.

It also explores the limited opportunities that are available to women with no educational qualifications. However, Mina turns her life around after she approaches Panah – a shelter that not only takes both Mina and her daughter in, but gives her vocational training as well.

Shattering the Silence is a 4-part animated series that aims to engage audiences, especially children, with real-life stories of child abuse, and to educate them with the relevant laws and resources that exist, and the steps that can be taken if they, or anyone they know, is forced into marriage, labour, trafficking, or physical abuse.

Conceptualized, produced and directed by SOC Films, each short film is in Urdu and is about 2 to 3 minutes long. While the third animated short is about child marriage, the first and second parts highlighted children working as domestic labour and the real life story of Iqbal Masih respectively.
