Sexual assault rampant, police unconcerned: WAR

KARACHI: A woman and three men were executed by a jirga on the pretext of adultery in Bara Landi Kotal, Khyber Agency. The execution is the third of its kind in the area this year. People flocked to watch the execution following an arbitrary ‘interrogation’ by a jirga. The Landi Kotal administration confirmed the incident but did not register a case.

The police have failed to make any arrests following the gang rape of a Dalit woman in Haveli Thakur, Umerkot. The Umerkot DPO refused to accept that the woman was gang raped. The DPO has taken no initiative to have a medico-legal (ML) examination conducted.

If an FIR is registered for a gang rape, the investigation process necessitates an ML examination unless the FIR is withdrawn by the complainant. There are no grounds for the police not to pursue an ML report, as an FIR has been registered for the case. If the police waste time in having the examination done, it is likely that any evidence of rape would not turn up.

These cases clearly represent gross negligence and a lack responsibility on the part of the government, the police and the ML sector. Laws may have been changed, but as long as there is corruption, a lack of accountability and vested interests of the powerful at stake, justice will not be delivered. Added to Mukhtar Mai, Naseema Labano and Kianat Soomro, the list of those who await justice continues to grow.
