Sexual assault on 17-year-old boy: Judge orders FIRs against police, jail officials
Karachi: The district and sessions judge (DSJ) Malir ordered the registeration of an FIR against a policeman, Shakil Talib, and an inmate for the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old-boy, Zeeshan Butt.
The judge also ordered an FIR against police officials who registered fake FIRs against the teenager.
The inquiry officer, Judicial Magistrate (JM) Ayub Bhatti, submitted a report to DSJ Ghulam Mustafa Memon, confirming that the boy was sexually assaulted. He also submitted the medical examination report and the statements of the jail superintendent who deposed before the court.
The boy’s mother had filed a petition under Section 22-A of the Criminal Procedure Code in the court of the DSJ, saying that her son was tortured and sexually abused by jail officials, and a number of cases relating to robbery and a shootout with the police were falsely registered against him. She requested the court to order the registration of an FIR against those responsible for the assault.
The DSJ had then constituted a judicial inquiry, appointing JM Malir Ayub Bhatti as the inquiry officer. On Thursday, JM Bhatti submitted a report confirming that the boy was sexually assaulted, after which the DSJ ordered the registration of an FIR against jail officials and an inmate.
The judge also ordered the cancellation of all cases registered against the teenager, and also ordered for registering FIRs against officials who had previously registered the fake FIRs. –SB
SHC issues notices to DAG, AG: The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued notices on Thursday to the deputy attorney general (DAG) and the advocate general (AG) Sindh on a petition seeking environmental-friendly mills in Thatta.
The petitioner, Dr Ghulam Hyder Shah, submitted that flour and rice mills situated near Thatta were creating a dusty and smoky environment and people residing in nearby areas were complaining of allergies and asthma due to this.
He submitted that the dusty and smoky environment was also creating health hazards not only for labourers but also for wildlife, which also suffered due to the discharge of effluent into ponds and drains.
The petitioner requested the court to direct the respondent mills to obtain no-objection certificates from the Environment Protection Agency and install filters in the mills to stop pollution.
He also sought an injunction from the court, restraining mills from operating without filters. The SHC’s division bench, headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmed, after preliminary hearing of the petition, issued notices to the DAG and the AG Sindh and called for their comments.
Forex scam case: The SHC adjourned the hearing of the bail applications of the directors of a money exchange company for want of time. The court fixed October 22 for hearing the petitions.
Hanif Kali along with Abdul Munaf Kalia and Javed Khanani were facing charges of illegally transferring money, evading import duties and taxes and causing a colossal loss to the government in respect of foreign exchange.
The applicants’ counsel, Rasheed A. Razvi, submitted that no evidence of money laundering had been established against the defendants who had been detained for the last 10 months. He submitted that the trial court denied bail to them despite the fact that no direct complaint was filed against them by the State Bank of Pakistan.
In an identical case, the SHC also issued notices for October 22 to the DAG and the FIA on a bail petition of Atif Aziz Polani.
