Seven IT universities to be set up soon

ISLAMABAD- The Minister for Science and Technology, Dr Ataur Rahman, has said that the present government is giving high priority to the promotion of quality education and information technology.

He was inaugurating a two-week regional course on ‘Developing Competency-based Curriculum.’

The course has been organised by the Colombo Plan Staff College for Technical Education, Philippines, with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education. The main objective of the workshop is training on the development of competency-based curriculum for technical education. Twenty-two participants from 16 countries, including senior teachers and heads of polytechnics of Asia Pacific region, are participating in the course.

Ata said tremendous efforts have been made to strengthen and improve research and development capabilities of universities, technical institutions and training centres for the promotion of science and information technology in Pakistan.

He said that a large number of information technology (IT) universities are being set up in the country. Seven new IT universities are planned to be set up by the government and the private sector.

He said that a new television channel for education would be launched next year which will be entirely dedicated to promotion of education. He expressed the hope that students would get quality education through this channel.

He announced that the launching of an IT university through distance education was under process. It would work through TV, radio and internet, he added. However, he made it clear that this innovative university would not be confined to distance learning but would also provide learning within the cities.

Stressing the importance of quality education, the minister said that no headway could be made in this field without fixing higher standards. In this regard he said that a number of programmes have been initiated to improve the quality of education. He stressed that there is need to attract the best talented minds to the field of science and technology and provide them opportunities to exploit their talents for the development of the country.
