Senior journalist K-M Sharif passes away

KARACHI: Senior journalist K.M. Sharif passed away here early Sunday morning due to cardiac arrest. He was 72. He leaves behind his wife, a son and four daughters.

Sharif was suffering from multiple diseases, including heart condition, for quite some time. On Sunday morning, he suffered a major cardiac attack, which proved fatal. He breathed his last at his residence. His funeral prayer was offered in Madani Masjid, PECH Society in the after­noon, which was largely attended by his friends, relatives and journalists. He was buried in Azam Basti graveyard. 1

He had been writing a column titled ‘Bridge Notes’ for several years on the game for the Weekend section of Business Recorder.

Born in Bangalore in 1935, he received his early education from there and attained a bachelor’s degree in commerce from a local college. After partition of the Sub-continent he @graied to Pakistan and had settled in Karachi.

In Karachi, he studied law and received L.L.B degree from Karachi University.

In the beginning of his practical life he tried to do his own business, but failed. After that he adopted journalism as a career and joined daily Morning News in the seventies.

After retirement from daily Morning News as chief editor, Sharif started a monthly magazine, ‘Industrial Times’ in 1985. He continued to publish Industrial Times, of which he was chief editor, fill his death. He was also associated with Pakistan Almanac since 2000 as its editor. The late Sharif was member of Karachi Gymkhana for the last 25 years and convener of its bridge society.
