Security put on red alert in Pindi: Possible suicide attack on police

RAWALPINDI: Oct 10: Police have been placed on ‘red alert’ in the light of intelligence reports of suicide attack on Police Lines, Rawalpindi, the city police officer (CPO) said on Wednesday.

CPO Saud Aziz said: “Police have been placed on red alert in the light of reports of terrorist attacks. Around 50 police personnel have been deployed at the police lines which could be one of the targets. We have been taking extra security measures to protect the mosque and mess in the police lines.”

Police have already been directed to exercise extra vigilance and police stations have been told to intensify patrolling in their respective areas to ensure foolproof security.

Police personnel have also been deployed on a number of roads and vital installations mainly around the markets and police offices. Night patrolling by the police and army has also been started in the cantonment areas.

The CPO said: “We are taking no chances. The tightened security will ensure that whoever is intending to carry out such attacks will not do it so easily.”

Earlier at a press conference the CPO revealed that Rawalpindi police had busted six gangs of criminals involved in robbery, car thefts, burglary and liquor selling and arrested 25 people. The arrested persons included two cousin sisters who had been leading a gang of car-lifters.

The CPO said the police had arrested a notorious car-lifter, Mohammad Ashraf, some time ago. In his absence, his wife Razia Bibi took charge of the gang along with her cousin, Noreen Raza, and continued car-lifting.

The CPO said six stolen cars had also been recovered from the gang, and nine people, including the two women, arrested.

On their return from the NWFP, two women car-thieves used to bring narcotics to Rawalpindi, the CPO said.

He also revealed that the police had seized huge quantity of locally-made liquor.

“The poisonous liquor had recently claimed several lives in other parts of the country,” the CPO said.

He said four persons had been arrested in connection with the liquor case and investigation started. The liquor was distilled somewhere in Jhelum.

He said a five-member gang of burglars had been busted by the police and valuables recovered.

The burglars had been active in Lalazar, Tulsa Road and other parts of Civil Lines area.
