SCBA members mull over no-trust move against Asma

ISLAMABAD: An emergency meeting of the executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has been called on May 7 against the attitude of the bar president Asma Jehangir.

Eleven SCBA executive committee members had filed the requisition for calling the meeting. Meanwhile, the SCBA members have announced that they will run the affairs of the bar without Asma Jehangir if she didn’t change her attitude. Some lawyers’ leaders said a no-confidence proceedings could also be initiated against Asma Jehangir.

A meeting headed by SCBA general secretary Qamar Zaman Qureshi and attended by Mian Javed, Tabinda Islam, Habib Qureshi, Saliheen Mughal, Sanaullah Zahid, Aslam Ghuman, Arif Khan, Afzal Khan, Taj Muhammad Mengal, Noor Alam, Syed Saeed Akhtar and Rifaqat Ali here said Asma Jehangir was repeatedly told during the last two years to change her attitude but she ignored the lawyers’ advice.

Sindh Bar Council member Mehmoodul Hassan, who came to Islamabad from Karachi, said Asma Jehangir was damaging the lawyers’ cause. He said the SCBA president didn’t utter even a single word on non-implementation of court decisions, illegal use of official property, shortage of judges in the courts, and corruption and loot and plunder during the last two years. He said Asma Jehangir speaks about the judiciary and the Supreme Court in an executive style. He went on to saying that Asma was playing the role of the Presidency’s representative instead of representing the lawyers. Mehmoodul Hassan said these factors are forcing the lawyers to bring no-confidence move against Asma Jehangir.
