Rauf Klasra
ISLAMABAD, October 08 2005: Prominent human rights activist and constitutional lawyer Asma Jehangir will appear before the Supreme Court to represent Sonia Naz in the rape case on October 10 (Monday).

Sonia will also appear before the court along with her lawyers. Talking to The News from Lahore, Asma Jehangir said she was happy that the Supreme Court had summoned concerned parties to hear the Sonia Naz case. She said it was really good on the part of the higher judiciary to give importance to a case of a rape victim.

Asma said she would pray to the court to order making inquiry report of DIG Zafar Qureshi public in the greater interest of justice. Asma was of the view that the publication of the police inquiry report would give an idea to the people of Pakistan that to what extent the charges of Sonia levelled against Faisalabad police cops were true.

She said she would also pray to the court to order implementation of the recommendation of the DIG Zafar Qureshi report that had asked the government to get an FIR registered against suspended SP Khalid Abdullah, Inspector Jamshed Chisti and others on charges of abduction and rape of Sonia.

Meanwhile, talking to The News Sonia said she was happy that finally her case was being taken up in the Supreme Court. She demanded that the DIG Zafar Qureshi report be made public because it would establish her credibility in the eyes of people. “When people read the findings and recommendations of the DIG Zafar Qureshi report, they will automatically realise authenticity of my charges of rape against suspended SP Khalid Abdullah and others,” Sonia hoped. Sonia vowed to contest her case at all forums without getting afraid from any side.

APP adds: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has fixed the date for bearing of the case of Sonia Naz on Monday (October 10). Notices have been issued to petitioner Sonia Naz through her counsel Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, Superintendent of Police Abdullah Khalid and Inspector Jamshed Iqbal Chishti through the inspector-general of police (Punjab) to appear before the Court on the date of hearing.

The inspector-general of police is required to supply six complete sets of the inquiry report for the court purposes, besides providing copies of the same to all others to whom notices have been issued, well before time. Copy of the order was also sent to the Punjab chief secretary.

Meanwhile, the Faisalabad additional district and sessions judge on Friday extended the pre-arrest bail of suspended SP Khalid Abdullah for another seven days. The Sargodha police had registered a case against SP Khalid Abdullah along with other police officials for keeping Asim Yousuf, the husband of Sonia Naz into their custody without any record of his arrest. The suspended SP had been directed to appear in the court on October 14 (Friday).
