Satellite decoders, dish antennas defy law of demand

KARACHI: Satellite dish and receivers have recorded a sharp price hike of an average 83 per cent and were in short supply after cable operators were ordered to suspend their services following the state of emergency declared in the country on Saturday.

Muhammad Rizwan, a dealer in satellite decoders at the electronics market in Saddar area informed The News that dish antennas were not available in the market now as the demand has increased considerably over the weekend which the dealers could not meet.

“People are addicted to receiving minute-by-minute information and when TV channels went off air following the emergency rule announced by the government, they are restless and starved of information. The only alternative they have is to gather information through satellite as majority of the Pakistani channels are being broadcast abroad and hence people do not hesitate in investing for the sake of information,” explained Rizwan.

He disclosed that government officials were the top buyers while people from all other status levels were showing equal interest. A number of dealers in other parts of the metropolis said that earlier demand was very low for satellite decoders and receivers as cable operators had encroached most of their business.

“And now in the current scenario and the prevailing situation in the country, the dish antennas that were earlier sold for Rs6,000 are now being sold at around Rs11,000. With supply shortage, prices are expected to soar in the coming days,” a majority of the dealers remarked.
