SAFMA, MC-P condemn attack on journalist’s car

LAHORE: South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) and Media Commission-Pakistan (MC-P) Saturday condemned the attack on Hyderabad Press Club’s former president Mahesh Kumar’s car.

Three motorcyclists attacked Kumar’s car while he was inside the club building a few days ago. Eight bullets holes were found at different places on the car. Some of the bullets targeted the CNG cylinder, which seems to indicate that their motive was to cause an explosion.

“From the pattern of the attacks, it seems this is the second warning issued to the journalist and this time the level of threat is higher than before.

The authorities should immediately investigate the threats and bring the responsible to account in order to achieve an atmosphere of freedom of expression,” SAFMA Secretary General Imtiaz Alam and MC-P President M Ziauddin said in a joint statement.

“Independent journalists have been reporting harassment and silencing. Targeting journalists and media personnel is a troubling trend in a democratic rule. It should end immediately,” the media rights campaigners said, demanding immediate action to protect media freedom.
