Sabri was a bold journalist: speakers

Karachi: Sardar Ali Sabri was a bold and committed journalist who upheld the historic journalistic traditions set by Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar and Maulana Zafar Ali Khan.

These views were aired at a function organised by the Sardar Ali Sabri Memorial Society (SALSMS) in collaboration with the Mir Khalilur Rahman Memorial Society (MKRMS) at the Broadcasting Hall on Saturday to observe the 27th death anniversary of Sardar Ali Sabri.

The speakers included Additional Secretary Shahid Muneer Berlas, Vice-Chancellor Karachi University Prof Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, Group Director Jang Group Muhammad Suleman, Group Director Jang Group Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Zia and Prof Mateeur Rehman.

They paid glowing tributes to Sardar Ali Sabri while underling his services for the cause of truth in the field of journalism. The speakers also appreciated Arshad Sabri who is running the MKRMS as its chairman for regularly organising meetings and seminars in the memory of late trend-setting journalists and leaders of the Pakistan Movement.

Earlier, six position holders who did their Masters in mass communications from the Karachi University in 2008 and 2009 were given medals and cash awards.

It was informed that Sardar Ali Sabri Gold Medal and other cash awards had been initiated by the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Jang Group of Newspapers Mir Khalilur Rahman.

Arshad Sabri said that the arrangements for the first death anniversary of his late father had been made by the late Mir Khalilur Rahman himself. At the first death anniversary, Mir Khalilur Rahman had announced to give away the medals and cash prizes to the position holders every year, Sabri added.

Muhammad Suleman and Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Zia appreciated these efforts and assured to continue the trend set by Mir Sahab. Dr Zia also announced that from now on the Jang Group would prefer the position holders for employment.

The position holders who were awarded were: Rahat Kamal (first position holder of 2008), Azizun Nisa Athara (second position holder), Nokhaiz Shah (third position holder), Naureen Aqeel (first position holder of 2009), Haya Iqbal Fatima (second position holder) and Mehreen Masood Malik (third position holder).

The first position holders were given Rs10,000 whereas the second and third position holders were presented with Rs5,000 each. Dr Hafiz Qari Attaul Mustafa Jameel Rathore recited from the Holy Quran and Syed Zainab presented a ‘Na’at’ at the function.
