RTI Law Empowers Erstwhile FATA, Says Syed Saadat Jahan
Dara Adam Khel: Addressing a seminar on the ‘Right to Information Act (RTI) 2013’ at FATA University, Syed Saadat Jahan, Assistant Director of Communication at KP Information Commission (KPIC), emphasized the transformative power of the RTI law in integrating erstwhile FATA/Newly Merged Districts (NMDs) into the legal and governance structures of Pakistan. The RTI Act 2013 aims to grant basic human and legal rights to the people of these districts, fostering robust social and economic development to eliminate the longstanding sense of alienation and deprivation among residents.
The seminar, attended by faculty members, university administration. Jahan highlighted that Public Information Officers, along with Village/Neighborhood Secretaries and Assistant Directors of the Local Government Department, have undergone comprehensive training to facilitate the inclusion of these tribal areas into the mainstream governance system, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Honored by the presence of Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Jahanzeb, the seminar showcased KPIC’s commitment to uplifting the Newly Merged Areas by ensuring the right to access information, leading to equitable distribution of opportunities and resources.
Jahan emphasized that students and the educated segment have a vital role to play in monitoring public bodies and exercising their fundamental right to information.
Addressing the issue of gender equality, Syed Saadat Jahan urged female students to assert their rights by lodging information requests on their own behalf, as the ratio of female requesters remains significantly low. KPIC firmly believes in promoting gender equality and encourages active participation from all segments of society.
The seminar concluded with a renewed focus on the potential of the RTI Act to empower communities, drive development, and foster a more transparent and inclusive governance system. The attendees left the session equipped with knowledge and a shared commitment to utilize the right to information as a tool for progress.
