Rs9m spent on women prisoners’ release: minister

Karachi: Sindh Minister for Women’s Development, Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto said on Monday that her department paid more than 2 million rupees under the head of fine to get 53 women imprisoned in different jails across the province released, besides spending Rs3.2 million to buy air tickets so as to send 71 female foreign prisoners, including nine juvenile prisoners to their respective countries.

While chairing a departmental meeting she that her department paid 1million rupees under the head of bail money of 22 women prisoners and Rs2.7 million to get released 73 juvenile prisoners.

The minister said that a total of 146 women and 73 juveniles benefited from Revolving Fund set up by Women’s Development Department. On the occasion she was told that a committee decided on a beneficiary of the fund on merit basis keeping in view that if anybody is needy or committed the crime first time.

She was told that the committee had so far spent 9 million rupees under head of fine, bail money and air fare. Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto was of the view that more steps were needed to train the women prisoners so that they could become responsible citizens of the society as they were already an important part of the society and can play their role in its betterment. She said that women prisoners and their relatives should be provided awareness on how they could benefit from the fund set up for them.
