Role of media to curb terrorism underlined

LARKANA- Speakers of a seminar here on Sunday underlined the importance of media role to combat terrorism. The seminar, “Terrorism and Role of Media”, was arranged by S Iqbal Babu here at the Nizamani Labour Hall, the other day. It was chaired by Nayyer Hussain Haider, Additional Inspector General of Police, Sukkur region.

Addressing the seminar, Haider said that terrorism had become a global threat and was rampant in many countries with its gruesome tenacity. He said that complete eradication of terrorism seemed impossible. However, it can be minimised with positive role of media by creating awareness about this menace in all the segment of society, he said. “Media can produce views about terrorism through investigative reporting and by bringing the ulterior motives of terrorism into time light,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, senior advocate and veteran Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Abdul Razzal Soomro maintained that terrorism was an undefined term. Speaking next, Syed Mushtaq, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (operations), Sukkur police, said that terrorism was rampant in various forms in the world, including Pakistan. He said that the police along with media were also playing its role to combat terrorism.

Speaking next, renowned labour leader Khalid Chandio said terrorism had become a serious threat and terrorist forced innocent people for the acceptance of their demands. Speaking next, Sharaf Siddiqui pointed out that state terrorism had given way to suicide bombing. Speaking next, Kalpna Divi advocate, called upon the journalists not to scandalise the incidents of violence. Mashooq Odhano and former president Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Aslam Shaikh and S Iqbal Babu also spoke on the occasion.
