‘Right to information’: Journalists must demand enactment of law

QUETTA: In line with the Article 19-A of the Constitution of Pakistan, journalists must demand federal and provincial governments to ensure an early enactment of new and effective Right to Information Law in the country.

Credit goes to the incumbent government of PPP, which inserted Right to Information law in the Constitution of Pakistan through the implementation of the 18th amendment.

These remarks were made by Zahid Abdullah, Programme Manager Center for Peace and Development Initiative Pakistan (CPDI) during a day-long training workshop organised for the journalists titled “Using Right to Information legislation for investigative reporting” at local hotel on Wednesday. A large number of journalist from various districts of the province participated in the workshop.

Programme Manager CPDI while elaborating the access to Right to Information law said that investigative journalists while gathering the facts about any news stories must use the existing section 137 of Local Government Ordinance 2001 and Freedom of Information Ordinance 2002 for developing investigative reports.

Earlier, Aftab Aalam of CPDI delivered detailed lecture on the contemporary issues of mass media. He highlighted the responsibilities of the media personnel and suggested ways to improve the values of true, impartial and responsible journalism in Pakistan.

Journalists hailing from different districts of the province spoke about the impediments and hardships they faced while developing the investigative stories for their respective media outlets. They lauded the efforts of CPDI for arranging workshop on “Right to Information” law for the journalists which they described as beneficial for them.
