Revival of commissionerate system in Sindh flayed

SUKKUR: Speakers at a convention held under the banner of Jeevay Pakistan Jeevay Maqami-Hakoomat (JPJM) here on Wednesday severely condemned the imposition of the commissionerate system and revival of Police Act 1861 in Sindh.

Reaffirming their commitment to continue protesting till the provincial government withdrew its decision, they said the axing of the Local Government Ordinance 2001 showed that the government was not serious about devolving power at grassroots level and giving relief to the poor.

Former chairman of National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) and JPJM Quaid Daniyal Aziz was the chief guest at the convention which the district administration had tried to sabotage by releasing water at the venue and threatening the management of the convention a day earlier.

Besides thousands of people, former elected local government representatives from all over Sindh, members of citizen community boards, activists of civil society organisations, representatives of press and bar associations and leaders of Local Council Associations attended the convention.

Speaking on the occasion, Daniyal Aziz urged President Zardari to think about the poor as poverty, inflation and unemployment had destroyed the whole economy of the country. He said the PPP was the party of common man and it should not be made the the party of the Zardari family.

He further said that like Egypt, Syria and Bahrain, a revolution was heading towards Pakistan which would change the life of common man in the country.

He demanded the government stop undemocratic tactics by denying the fundamental political rights of people and fully implement the 18th Amendment in letter and spirit. “Those who are trying to create hurdles in way of the future of Pakistan’s Constitutional obligations and democracy cannot succeed,” he said

By reviving the LGO 1979 and Police Act 1861, the provincial authorities wanted to usurp the political, administrative, financial and democratic rights of local government representatives ensured in Article 140-A of the Constitution, Daniyal Aziz added.

Besides Daniyal Aziz, those who spoke at the convention included former Sukkur Nazim and LCA Sindh convener Nasir Shah, former Haripur Nazim and LCA Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Yousaf Ayub, former Quetta Nazim and LCA Balochistan President Mir Maqbool Lehri, LCA Punajb President Asghar Shah Gillani and former Muzaffargarh Nazim Malik Allah Yar and others.
