Release of journalist demanded
QUETTA- At an emergency meeting of Balochistan Newspapers Editors Council a demand was made for immediate release of a senior journalist Abdul Rasheed Butt senior news editor, Urdu dailies Lashkar and Ba Khabar.
Criticizing the arrest if journalists by the police, the council claimed that Rasheed Butt’s detention by the police is an attack on the freedom of press. The council also criticized senior journalist arrest when he was at his news desk in his own office.
The council said that Rasheed Butt’s detention by the police might create bad blood between the Balochistan government and the press, prejudicial to both. As such, it is in the supreme interest of the provincial government and the press, that Rasheed Butt be released.
Rasheed Butt’s newspapers sources said that this senior journalist had recently made critical appreciation of the law and order situation in his two newspapers. This might have angered the authorities, resulting in his arrest by the police.
