Rape victims father attempts suicide

LAHORE, April 20,2005: The father of a rape victim attempted suicide at the Lahore Press Club (LPC) on April 19 because the people who raped his daughter have not been arrested.

Asghar Bhatti poured petrol on himself and was about to set himself on fire, but Qilla Gujjar Singh police stopped him. Malik Raheel, Qilla Gujjar Singh station house officer, said that Asghar and his daughter had been taken to Haji Nawaz, the additional secretary to the chief minister to resolve the matter. Muhammad Azam Bhatti, Muhammad Riaz Bhatti and Muhammad Naveed allegedly abducted Nazish, 17, while she was on her way to Government Allama lqbal College, Sialkot, on February 22.

They drugged her and raped her for 37 days. Asghar had told journalists that sub-inspector Khalid Bhatti and a constable had also raped his daughter when she was at the police station for questioning.
