Rallies across NWFP against emergency

PESHAWAR, Nov 16: Various political parties staged separate demonstrations and took out protest rallies across the province on Friday against the imposition of state of emergency and proclamation of the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO). The women’s wing of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) held a demonstration in Peshawar and condemned the removal of superior court judges and curbs on media.

The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) organised a protest rally, which was led by JUI general secretary Shujaul Mulk, information secretary Jalil Jan and former NWFP ministers Asif Iqbal Daudzai and Amanullah Haqqani.

Police resorted to tear-gas shelling and a baton charge when they reached the Bajauri Chowk. Police arrested Shujaul Mulk, Jalil Jan, Amanullah Haqqani, Asif Iqbal Daudzai and other JUI workers.

The Awami National Party (ANP) workers organised a demonstration at the Hashtnagri Chowk, GT Road.

ANP additional general secretary Haji Mohammad Adeed, provincial general secretary Mian Inftikhar Hussain, and Ghulam Mustafa addressed the workers and condemned the ‘mini martial law’ in the country.

Police baton-charged the protesters and arrested two ANP workers.

MARDAN: The ANP, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F), Jamaat Islami (JI) and Pakistan Muslim League (N) held separate rallies here on a call given by the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM).

The JUI-F and JI took out processions at Pakistan Chowk after Friday prayers and condemned President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s extra constitutional actions.

Police baton-charged the workers and arrested three ANP activists, including Union Council Jamal Garhi nazim Falak Naz Khan. PML-N workers also staged a demonstration and burnt tyres on roads.

LAKKI MARWAT: The ANP and JUI-F held separate demonstrations in Lakki city and Serai Naurang.

ANP acting president Allah Nawaz Khan Marwat led a procession. Students affiliated with the Pukhtun Students Federation also participated in the protest rally.

Addressing the rally, ANP leaders demanded the release of arrested political leaders, lawyers, journalists and members of the civil society and human rights organisations. Meanwhile, law-enforcement agencies’ personnel detained JUI District Amir Maulana Abdul Wahid.

In Serai Naurang, police baton-charged JUI workers and arrested six local leaders, Maulana Iezazullah, Mufti Haroon, Maulana Qudratullah, Maulana Shaista Khan, Maulana Umar and Maulana Syed Wali.

BANNU: ANP and PPP workers held a rally at the Chowk Bazaar on Friday. Police arrested eight PPP activists.

HANGU: JUI workers took out a procession from Al-Sheravi mosque and held a rally at the Railway Chowk.

MANSEHRA: Two processions were held here in which activists of various parties and civil society members participated.

HARIPUR: Police arrested five PPP workers who were preparing to take out a procession.

A group of PML-N workers staged a protest rally at Chowk Purani Committee.
