Quetta journalists protest against Hayatullah’s murder

QUETTA, June 20 2006: Journalists protested in Quetta on June 19 against the murder of tribal journalist Hayatullah and demanded his killers be arrested immediately. The rally, organised by the Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ), passed through various avenues of the provincial capital. They wore black armbands and carried placards and banners condemning the murder.

“The journalists of Balochistan strongly condemn the cold-blooded murder of our professional peer from the Frontier. The way he was arrested and subjected to inhuman treatment before being killed is shocking. This has created panic among journalists across the country,” said BUJ President Shahzada Zulfiqar. He demanded an immediate investigation into the murder and the safety of journalists.

“Journalists are engaged in highlighting the problems of society. They have dedicated their lives to fighting the people’s war for their rights. Unfortunately, in return they are rewarded very badly for their services. This is not the right way to treat journalists,” he remarked. Zulfiqar said the government must take tangible measures to ensure protection of the press. “As long as press men work under constant fear, the official claims of the press enjoying full freedom in the country remain false.” malik siraj akbar.
