Quality Check: PTA to conduct QoS survey of ISPs

KARACHI: To gauge the standards of customer satisfaction and in order to check the quality of service being provided to Internet users, a quality of service (QoS) survey of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) has been planned by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority from September to November 2007, said Deputy Director PTA, Khurram Ali Mehran while talking to Daily Times.

He said, Internet Service Providers Association (ISPAK) has been informed for the schedule and parameters of the survey. PTA Zonal offices at Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar and Rawalpindi will carry out the QoS survey.

PTA has sufficient experience in conducting QoS surveys, and now after acquiring latest equipment, it will monitor the services of ISP’s more effectively. He further said that these checks and surveys would result in quality improvement of services being provided by ISPs.

Giving the details of the survey he said that during the survey parameters like serviceability, set up time, modem connect rate, download time/speed and sustainability would be checked.

In order to ensure that the Internet customers get best quality, the survey is spread over whole of Pakistan covering both bigger and small cities. The results of the survey will indicate the position of a particular ISP in terms of its quality parameters mentioned above.

During the year the companies have improved on the deficiencies observed in the 2006 survey of ISPs and it is hoped that the quality of service will further improve. Currently Pakistan has 3.5 million Internet subscribers, which were 2.4 million in the year 2006.

PTA, the regulatory body of country s telecom sector, regularly monitors the quality of service of all telecom services by conducting comprehensive surveys throughout the year, results of which are published in the media. In addition, periodic inspections based on subscriber s complaints are also conducted. Romail Kenneth
