Qalamkar Awards

Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ebad, on Thursday called upon the print and electronic media to play their role positively, saying media persons should avoid demoralising and misleading people by sensationalising “ordinary and unimportant events”.

Addressing the Qalamkar Awards distribution ceremony at the Governor’s House, organised by the Sindh Culture and Tourism Department, he termed the restoration of democratic process as well as freedom to judiciary and media as ‘historic achievements” of the present government.

The governor said the most important achievement of the present government was strengthening of democratic institutions as for the first time in country’s history, elected assemblies were going to complete their constitutional tenure.

Earlier, district governments completed their tenure and the process continued for the second term he claimed adding that now the assemblies would also be elected again and complete their tenure without any adventure by any ruler.

Dr Ebad claimed that the scenario presented in TV talk shows was contrary to ground realities and charged that some people with vested interests were trying to destabilise the country.

He said the media had been granted liberty by the present government but it was in its initial phase and with the passage of time, media will mature but urged the media to refrain itself from destabilising the country.

Later, the governor conferred awards along with cash prize of Rs0.1 million each to 39 writers, poets and intellectuals, including Mohsin Bhopali (late), Shakeel Ahmed Zia (late), Begum Mehmooda Sultana, Nighat Mirza Hina, Binte Nazir, Gulnar Afreen, Mahjabeen Sheryar, Mustafa Azizabadi and Ajmal Dehelvi.
