Punjab, Sindh appoint administrators

LAHORE/Karachi: Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer and Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad have signed the Local Government Amendment Act 2010, after which the LG system in both provinces can be ‘dissolved at anytime’, private TV channels reported on Tuesday.

The Punjab government has decided to appoint district coordination officers as administrators in place of nazims. Now that Taseer has signed the act, the process of appointing administrators in Punjab will be initiated.

According to the channels, Punjab will now see a flurry of activity in the form of transfers and postings of government officials on a “large scale”.

In Karachi, Ebad issued the Sindh Local Government (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2010, facilitating the Sindh government in the appointment of provincial and local government officers as administrators in place of nazims.

According to the LG bill, BS-19 officers would
be installed as administrators in districts, while BS-18 and 17 officers would be appointed as administrators in talukas (sub-districts) and towns respectively.

After promulgation of the governor’s ordinance, the Sindh LG Department would dissolve all LG bodies with approval from Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah. After the formal dissolution, the government would issue the notification on the appointments of administrators in districts, talukas and towns today.

Finalised: According to official sources, both the MQM and PPP leaderships have finalised the names of
bureaucrats for their appointment as administrators.
