Punjab cabinet approves Yellow Cab Scheme
Lahore: The Punjab cabinet which met on Thursday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif gave formal approval to the Yellow Cab Scheme under which 20,000 vehicles would be distributed. A forty percent quota has been allocated for southern Punjab compared to its 31 percent population.
The Yellow Cab Scheme would be unique with regards to transparency brought about by the computerised balloting for the distribution of vehicles, which would be held at the divisional level in the presence of electronic media. The cabinet also granted approval to the draft bill for the amendment in Section 17(4) of the Government Servants Housing Foundation Act, 2004. Chairman of the Punjab Information Technology Board gave a detailed briefing regarding websites of various departments for the promotion of e-governance in the province.
Addressing the meeting, the chief minister said that the Punjab government was implementing a comprehensive programme for the elimination of poverty and unemployment from the province and those solid measures had been taken in the new budget for generating job opportunities for the educated youth. He said that under the Yellow Cab Scheme, 2500 vehicles would be distributed among the winners of the draw every month and the process of distribution of 20,000 vehicles would be completed in eight months. He said that persons having intermediate or equivalent academic qualification would be eligible to apply for the scheme. The application forms would be available at all branches of Bank of Punjab as well as the websites of the Transport Department and the Punjab Bank.
The successful applicants would have to make a 20 percent down payment at the time of delivery and pay the remaining amount in monthly instalments.
The Bank of Punjab would also offer a loan facility at an extremely low markup. He said that like other projects of the Punjab government, the Yellow Cab Scheme would be completed in a highly transparent manner. Committees, which would include Akhuwat representatives and students, would be formed for the scrutiny of the particulars of successful applicants and patwaris and tehsildars would have no cause to raise concern with regards to the verification process. Expressing his views regarding e-governance, the chief minister said that promotion of e-governance was the need of the hour for the solution of peoples’ problems and improving the efficiency of government departments and that a comprehensive strategy had been adopted for this purpose.
