PTV sports channel to go on air soon: minister

ISLAMABAD, August 20 2006: The sports and culture channel of PTV will be put on air soon as part of the government’s concerted efforts to promote sports in the country, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani, said on Saturday (Aug 19).

“Preparatory work for opening this channel is in the final stages and it will be launched soon”, the Minister said at the prize-distribution ceremony of regional cricket academies of Rawalpindi and Islamabad at Diamond Cricket Grounds.

The minister said that the new channel would show not only international and national competitions but also the local tournaments, which would thus be greatly promoted with this step. He said the government, imbued with the dynamic leadership of President Musharraf, was putting the country on right lines in all fields of life. Durrani recalled that the President had directed at a meeting in recent past how to develop cricket in the country. “He advised PCB Chairman to lay emphasis on grassroots promotion of the game”.

On this occasion, Durrani announced Rs 200,000 for the teams of Rawalpindi and Islamabad cricket academies, which earlier played the final match, won by the former team by two wickets. He also assured of sponsorship of Islamabad Cricket Association teams. He also gave away cricket bags to the two teams.

Earlier, the President of Islamabad Cricket Association, Shakil Shaikh said that the cricket academies were functioning under the supervision of Pakistan Cricket Board. Also present were Regional Development Manager of PCB, former Test cricketer Colonel Naushad, the President of RCA Muhammad Ashraf Qureshi and coaches Sabih Azhar and Taimur Azam.
