PTA shuts Voice Chat Channel

KARACHI- Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has closed down the Voice Chat Channel, Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (ISPAK) claimed on 9th October 2002.

A statement issued by the ISPAK said that the PTA, a telecommunications’ regulatory body, shut the Voice Chat Channel a couple of days ago.

It said that the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) had assured that the establishment of Pakistan Internet Exchange (PIE) would not be a cause of Internet gagging.

“But contrary to their promise, Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL) has used this as a tool to first gag the website of Net2Phone and similar other websites,” the statement said.

ISPAK said though the chairman PTA last month assured that the authority would remove ban from Net2Phone in a week, they closed down the Voice Chat Channel.

The ISPAK statement said that a PTCL official refused to issue orders regarding removal of ban from Net2Phone showing his helplessness as director general law of the company restricted him to do so. ISPAK termed the PTA’s decision as a harsh step for the weak and struggling industry of the country.
