Promotions to grade-22 were lawful, AG tells SC

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani promoted 54 government officials to BPS-22 in accordance with the law, Attorney General of Pakistan Anwar Mansoor Khan informed the Supreme Court on Monday.

A three-member Supreme Court bench was hearing a case regarding the promotions made by the prime minister through his discretionary powers while ignoring the principle of seniority. The AGP submitted that the sole criterion for promotions was that the officer should be in grade-21. He said rules had been followed during the promotions, keeping in view past practices. He said all the promoted officers had been treated equally.

Khan said the promoted officers deserved to be promoted. Arguing that the promotions were legitimate, he requested the court not to pass any order against the orders. During the hearing, Gul Muhammad Rind, a promoted officer, told the court that he had been elevated on merit. He said he would quit if the SC revoked his promotion. The court then said it would release a verdict soon.
