Projects worth Rs95bn approved for Sindh

Karachi: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) approved on Thursday nearly 50 projects, including nine worth about Rs95 billion for Sindh.

The projects were accorded approval at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Federal Finance Minister Dr Hafeez Shaikh.

A Sindh delegation comprising Finance Minister Murad Ali Shah, Adviser to the Chief Minister on Planning and Development Dr Kaiser Bengali, and Additional Chief Secretary (Development) Ishaq Lashari attended the meeting.

For Sindh, the main projects approved include the Rs27 billion Makhi Farash Irrigation and Water Supply project that is critical to the development of the proposed Thar coal project.

Murad Ali Shah and Kaiser Bengali argued that Thar coal was not a Sindh project, but one of national importance, given that it would supply electricity to the entire country, and should be treated at par with the Bhasha Dam in terms of its national importance.

Irrigation and road projects worth over Rs43 billion, to be financed by the ADB, were also approved. Dr Kaiser Bengali termed the meeting very positive and successful, a government spokesman said in a statement here.
