Pro-army protest camp in front of Jang Group offices

KARACHI: In order to intimidate the employees of the Jang Group, a pro-army protest camp by a little-known organisation was set up on Wednesday at I.I. Chundrigar Road, just opposite the buildings that house several offices of Pakistan’s largest media house.

Calling themselves the “Citizens of Karachi”, the people in the camp blared national songs on loudspeakers for hours. The banner hoisted at the white marquee tent of the camp demanded the closure of Geo News.

Some posters of senior officials of Pakistan armed forces were also displayed at the camp. The employees of the Jang Group were visibly scared by the presence of people who were showing their hatred for the Jang Group in unequivocal terms.

Several employees were scared of coming out of their workplace as the ‘protesters’ kept a close eye on the movement at the gates of buildings. The banner accused Geo of blasphemy, a charge which the Geo and Jang Group had unreservedly apologised to Allah Almighty and the Muslims around the world.

The security of the employees of Jang Group became a major concern after certain sections of the media whipped up hate propaganda against the Group on the pretext of religion. Protests and demonstrations were held in many parts of the country and the Geo TV channel was illegally taken off the air and still continues to be absent from the cable in many parts of the country.
