Prioritising women

Dr Najeeb A Khan

Nimra Irfan in her letter, ‘Women’s rights’ (March 22), has averred that honour killings, stove burnings and rapes in Pakistan indicate inadequate legal protection for women. There is no denying the fact that our parliamentarians are more interested in their perks and privileges rather than legislation on such serious matters. The majority of the people in Pakistan are also indifferent towards the plight of women.

However, in India, after the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi a bill to toughen India’s laws on sexual offences has been approved. One can only hope that the next government in power in Pakistan will come up with similar legislative measures for protection of women. The writer has rightly suggested a change in attitudes, culture and habits for this to happen.
