President orders release of journalists

RAWALPINDI (November 07 2007): A high-level meeting chaired by President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday reviewed the overall security situation in the country, following the imposition of emergency and expressed satisfaction over the measures taken. The President directed that the journalists arrested during the protests be immediately released.

The meeting here at the President’s Camp Office was attended by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani, Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao and Vice Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kiyani.

Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao gave an overview over the prevailing situation in the country and the measures taken by law-enforcement agencies to address the security situation.

The President directed the interior minister that all resources and assistance be provided to the law-enforcement agencies so they can operate unhindered and reach the masterminds behind the militants, extremists and terrorists.

He said there was a need to gear up the law-enforcement agencies so they could be in a better position to cope with militancy and extremists and counter the threat of terrorism. The information minister informed the situation relating to the media in the country. He said five journalists were arrested from Sindh and one from Punjab.

Vice Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kiyani informed the meeting about the deployment of military troops in Federally-Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and along the Pak-Afghan border for maintaining security.
