PPP wins six out of eight AJK LA reserved seats

MUZAFARABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party Azad Kashmir on Sunday won six out of eight reserved seats of the AJK Legislative Assembly raising its strength to 29 in a House of 49.

Elections to the reserved seats were held here at the Assembly building on Sunday. The PPP AJK got 6 seats (three women and one each of Ulema-Mashaikh, technocrats and overseas Kashmiris) while the Pakistan Muslim Legue-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Muslim Conference won one women’s seat each.

Those who were elected on five women reserved seats were: PPP’s Shazia Akbar, Sadaf Shaikh and Shaheen Dar; PML-N’s Fauzia Ashraf and Muslim Conference’s Meher-u-Nisah who was elected with the help of two votes of the PPP.

Sardar Abid Hussain Abid, Pir Attiq-ur-Rehman and Raja Wajid of the PPP were elected on the seats of technocrat, Ulema-Mashaikh and overseas Kashmiris respectively with the majority vote of 25.

All newly elected members of the Legislative Assembly on general and reserved seats will take oath on Monday when the Assembly meets at 10 am. Soon after oath taking, the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker will be elected. Election for the Prime Minister will be held on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari has felicitated PPP candidates on winning six out of eight reserved seats of the AJK Legislative Assembly.

In his message, the president said the victory of PPP candidates in the elections was a manifestation of the confidence reposed by the people in the party.

He expressed the hope that the newly elected MLAs will serve the people with devotion and work with national spirit for solving their problems and for continued development of the country.

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani also felicitated the PPP candidates on winning six out of eight reserved seats in the elections of AJK Legislative Assembly.

In his message of congratulations he said that the victory of PPP candidates by majority in the elections was a manifestation of the confidence reposed by the people in policies of the party.

He hoped that the newly elected members of the AJK Legislative Assembly would serve the people by discharging the entrusted responsibilities with devotion and national spirit to usher in an era of progress and prosperity.
