Postponement of APNS case hearing sought

ISLAMABAD- The hearing into the petition of All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) challenging the law governing the newspaper employees before the Supreme Court has again on February 22, 2003 been put off at the request of Society’s lawyers.

M S Khattak, Advocate-on-Record made the request on February 23, for petitioners lead Counsel, Barrister Abdul Hafeez Pirzada.

The hearing is likely to be moved to March 15.
The request for postponement of the hearing said that Pirzada was abroad for medical check up and treatment and may not be able to return before the second week of March.

The Counsel has been suffering from heart problems and has not been attending the Courts for the last two months except once when he put in a brief appearance on behalf of the Central Board of Revenue in its claim of Rs 500 million customs duty against Fecto-Belarus Tractors.

By challenging the Pakistan Newspaper Employees (Condition of Service) Act, the Society is also questioning the validity of the 7th Wage Board Award that recommends upward revision of the emoluments of news media workers.

The case has to come up for hearing before the First Bench headed by Chief Justice Sheikh Riaz Ahmed.

It was filed in July last year and was scheduled for first hearing on Jan 23 last.

Due to the illness of Pirzada the Bench had re-fixed it for Feb 25.
