Political activists, lawyers express solidarity with journalists

LAHORE (November 24 2007): Political activists, lawyers and people from civil society visited the hunger strike camp set up at the Lahore Press Club (LPC) by the Punjab Union of Journalists (PUJ) on Friday, to express solidarity with the protesting journalists waging a struggle for independence of media.

Among others Bushra Aitzaz, wife of Aitzaz Ahsan, President Supreme Court Bar Association (under arrest), PPP leaders Sami Ullah, Haji Ijaz, PML-N leaders Pervaiz Malik, Mujtaba Shuja joined the camp. The protestors raised full-throated slogans for independence of media and judiciary.

Bushra Aitzaz told reporters on the occasion that the government has started pre-poll rigging, as a good number of political activists are still behind the bars, hence, they would not be able to file nomination papers for general elections.

Moreover, MMA leader Liaquat Balouch, former information minister and PPP leader, Khalid Ahmad Khan Kharal also visited camp of private TV channel facing black out at Davis road to express solidarity with the its employees. Khalid Kharal said that the ban on Geo News was tarnishing the image of Pakistan all over the world.

He said that not only the civil society all across Pakistan, but also the minor innocent children were protesting against the ban on Geo news transmissions. The visitors also placed bouquet besides affixing the impressions of their hands in expression of their solidarity with the Geo News employees.
