Policeman among six killed

Karachi: A police constable from the Excise Department was among the six people gunned down in the city on Tuesday, while an MQM activist who was injured in an attack on Monday breathed his last at the hospital.

Thirty-five-year-old Police Constable (PC) Jamal Raza was shot dead in an ambush near the Mujahid Colony Ground of Orangi Town in the Mominabad police limits.

Station House Officer (SHO) Naveed Nasir said that PC Raza was an intelligence officer in the Excise Police Department and a resident of the Bismillah Colony in Orangi Town. The constable was on duty and riding on his motorcycle when two gunmen, also on bikes, cut across his vehicle and shot him once in the head before fleeing. The victim was moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) where he was pronounced dead. The police found the spent 9mm bullet casings which sent for forensic tests.

Investigators termed the murder of PC Raza as a targeted killing and added that they would also investigate whether the attack was sectarian in nature.

Two killed in Orangi

Violence in Orangi Town saw two people named Mohammed Basheer and Gul Ahmed being gunned down in a single incident at the Aligarh Bazaar.

SHO Zulqarnain of the Orangi Town police station said that Basheer was the owner of the Sajid Tea House, while Gul Ahmed was a vegetable vendor who parked his pushcart in front of the tea stall. Both men were busy with their work on Tuesday afternoon when armed motorcyclists opened fire at them and fled from the scene.

The injured were rushed to the ASH where Basheer and Gul breathed their last. The victims suffered multiple bullet wounds to their upper torsos and faces. Empty 30 bore bullet casings were recovered from the scene of the crime.

Investigators termed the double murder as yet another targeted attack and said that Basheer resided in Illahi Colony, while Gul Ahmed lived in the Bukhari Colony of Manghopir.

Man slain

In yet another case, Shahid was shot dead in front of House C5 in Sector-48D of Korangi No 2½.

SHO Iqtedar Alam of the Zaman Town police station said that Shahid selling sweets at a stall in front of his house when two armed motorcyclists shot him three times and fled from the scene. Shahid was moved to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where he died.

Investigators said this was also a target killing and added that the victim supported a political party.

Two shot in Peerabad

In a late night development on Tuesday, armed men gunned down Ali Haider and Adil Khursheed in separate areas of the Peerabad police jurisdiction.

SHO Ashfaq Baloch said Ali Haider was outside his house in the E-Block of Peerabad when two men on a motorcycle pumped three bullets into his upper torso and fled. The victim was moved to the ASH where he died.

The Peerabad police were busy completing the legal formalities of the first case when information was received that armed men shot and injured Adil Khursheed near the Qalanderia Hotel in Peerabad.

The police found the man lying critically wounded and he was also taken to the ASH where he breathed his last. Investigations revealed that Khursheed was a resident of the same area and was killed outside his house. The victim had been shot four times in the head and chest.

The criminals used 9mm pistols in the offence and investigators termed both the murders as targeted attacks, but added that other motives would also be looked into.

MQM activist dies

Meanwhile, an activist of the MQM, Javed Iqbal, who was injured in an attack on Monday near the Edhi Mortuary Home died in the morning at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. He was a member of the party’s Unit-114.

Policemen attacked

Two policemen were injured when a police kiosk along the Super Highway near Al-Asif Square was attacked with a homemade bomb in the wee hours of Tuesday. Quoting witnesses, police said two men riding a motorcycle, one wearing a helmet and the other hiding his face with a cloth, hurled the explosive device at the kiosk.

Following the low-intensity blast, the police and rescue teams rushed to the spot and shifted the two policemen, Head Constable Mukhtiar and Constable Altaf, to a private hospital. The bomb disposal squad also reached the scene and collected samples of the explosive material.

Separately, two constables were injured when two men on a motorcycle opened fire on them near Rasheedabad Chowk in Khawaja Ajmer Nagri. The two policemen, Nazeer and Asif, were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

New Karachi SP Syed Salman Hussain said the two constables were posted at the Manghopir police station.

They were on their way from the Khawaja Ajmer Nagri headquarters to Manghopir when they were attacked. The SP said both policemen were out of danger. In another development, some explosive material was found in Kunwari Colony. Peerabad Sub-Divisional Police Officer Rustam Nawaz said nine hand grenades were discovered in the area and defused by the bomb disposal squad.
