Police use batons against protesters, journalists

NAWABSHAH: A cameraman and three protesters were injured when police resorted to baton charge outside the press club here on Friday.

Relatives of Abdul Latif Siyal, a sacked employee of Habib Sugar Mills, staged a demonstration outside the press club to protest against the mills administration.

The protesters carrying body of a sister of Abdul Latif told journalists that he was sacked by the mills administration without any reason. They claimed that when his sister Rahiman heard the news, she died of shock.

A heavy contingent of police reached the spot and baton charged the protesters.

The police became so violent that they did not spare the dead body and also beat up cameramen performing their professional duties.

Qurban Khaskheli, the cameraman of a private news channel, and three protesters were injured in the baton charge.

Police led by DSP Aijaz Memon and SHO of A-Section police, Raja Naveed arrested more than 50 protesters while others dispersed.

Later journalists staged a sit in to protest police atrocities.

An emergency meeting of the Nawabshah Press Club, chaired by its president Ameer Ali Chandio, condemned police baton charge and expressed concern over increasing number of violent action of police on innocent people and journalists.

The meeting demanded suspension of DSP Aijaz Ali Memon and the SHOs of A, B and Airport police stations. It urged president, prime minister and chief minister of Sindh to take notice and direct the IGP Sindh to take strict action against the police officials involved in the action.
