Police torture on newsmen, lawyers: LHC orders video records of CCTV

LAHORE : While holding an enquiry into police torture on journalists and bar members during the demonstration against the suspension of Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Syed Zahid Hussain of the Lahore High Court (LHC) directed the Registrar Inquiry to produce the video recording of close circuit TVs installed in the LHC premises.

Earlier, the judge recorded the statements of three journalists Nawaz Tahir, Ulfat Bukhari and Taqweem-e-Millat Shah and put off the hearing till Thursday (today).

The court, however, observed that all relevant materials which may enable the court to reach the truth could be summoned from the print and electronic media.

But the newspaper clippings, photographs and the footage of the TV channels need to be specified whereupon the question of its reception will be considered, the court further observed.

On the request of bar for the inspection of the damaged chambers of lawyers, the court said that since the inquiry was at the initial stage, this request would be considered at the appropriate stage.

All the witnesses unanimously accused the police of torturing on journalists and lawyers besides damaging the lawyers’ chambers in the buildings situated at Fane Road and Turner Road. They also accused the police of firing tear-gas shells inside LHC premises and bringing armoured vehicle inside the Lahore High Court .
