Police rescue girl from karo-kari

SUKKUR – The timely action by the Deputy Inspector General of Police Sukkur Range, Bashir Ahmed Memon, the life of a girl, Saira Jatoi, who had married on her free will, was saved. She was declared Kari by the jirga decision on late Friday night and expected to be killed in Shikarpur.

According to details, Saira Bano D/O Abdul Aziz jatoi who was, tile student of class 10, residing at Shalimar Complex had married with one Muhammad Ismail Somro S/O Muhammad Punjal resident of Takkar Mohalla Sukkur her free will in Sukkur Sessions Court on June 7, 2007.

After the marriage the clash started between both the families and tribes. Soomro and Bano were feeling insecurity and hiding in different towns and for the past eight months they were residing in Karachi.Ten days ago, Soomro’s uncle, Dr Javed Ahmed Soomro and his wife Sumaiya Soomro was kidnapped on gunpoint by the Jatoi tribesmen from New Pind Sukkur and shifted them to an unknown place where they remained hostage. They were being pressurised to call back Bano and Soomro in which Junaid Soomro of Soomro tribe and Abid Jatoi of Jatoi tribe played key role and on pretext to forgive the couple, the uncle and his wife called them in Sukkur.

Later they were shifted to Mangi Laro area of Shikarpur where a jirga was held in which Abid Jatoi and Junaid Soomro played their active role and it was decided in the jirga that Dr jawed Soomro and his wife Samaiya Soomro might be released. While Ismail Soomro and his wife Saira Bano who was pregnant of six months may be divorced and handed over to Sardar Abid Jatoi, as she was declared Kari and preparations were under way to put her to death, but Ismail Soomro refused to divorce Saira Bano, as she was pregnant. Following this both of them were shifted to some undisclosed location.

On Friday evening, on a tip off DIG Sukkur Bashir Ahmed Memon ordered the ASP City Dr Khurram Rasheed to conduct raid and recover the couple. On these directives ASP City with the help of a local resident of Shikarpur, Qayyum Pitafi and along with the SP investigation Shikarpur raided Mangi Laro and recovered the couple, without firing a single bullet. Later, on the orders of DIG Sukkur, FIR (97/2008) under. sections 148, 149, 364, 342, 506/ 2 PPC was registered at “B” section police station Sukkur on the complaint of SHO “B” section police station Sukkur, Abdul Malik Kamanger against 11 persons including Sardar Junaid Soomro, Sardar Abid Hussain Jatoi, police constable Nisar Soomro and eight unknown persons.

Following the courageous act of the police, the IC Sindh and Home Minister has announced reward of Rs 0.1 million each for the police party, while the Sindh has give appreciation letter to the ASP City Sukkur DrKhurram Rasheed. The DIG police Sukkur has appealed to the IC Sindh to give Ismail Soomro job in the police department and allot him police quarter, so that, the couple could live under security.

Talking to the newsmen the couple said that they were feeling themselves insecure, as the Jatoi tribesmen could put them to death. They appealed to the police and NG0s especially Aurat Foundation, Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International to provide them safer place to live and also appealed to the judges of superior courts to play their role in providing security to them.
