Police find Daniel Pearl’s body?

KARACHI- Three men arrested Thursday directed police to the spot where they said Daniel Pearl had been buried, and police were “90 per cent sure”‘ the body they found was his, a senior cop said.

Police dug out the body in an open field in a very poor neighbourhood on the western edge of Karachi, the official said on condition of anonymity. He said they were “90 per cent sure it’s Daniel Pearl, but we are not taking the body from the site. We are leaving it here” while investigators examine the scene. No further information was immediately available about the three new suspects.

Meanwhile, two FBI agents were cross-examined Thursday by Pakistani lawyers representing four men on trial for the murder of US reporter Daniel Pearl, court sources said. Chief prosecutor Raja Qureshi said the cross-examinations were lengthy. Reporters are barred from the trial, which is being held in a Hyderabad prison here for security reasons. Defence lawyers Abdul Wahid Katpar and Rai Bashir said they had exposed flaws in evidence given by the FBI agents, who have been identified as John Falgan and Ronald Joseph.

Falgan had testified about a video showing Pearl’s execution by Islamic extremists, while Joseph had given a technical analysis of emails showing images of Pearl in captivity. The trial is due to continue Friday.

Pearl was kidnapped on January 23 in Karachi and a gruesome three-minute video was delivered to US officials a month later, showing Pearl’s brutal death. Saleh Zaafir adds from Islamabad: Federal Interior Secretary Tasneem Noorani has said that somebody has claimed that he has a clue to Pearl’s body. The secy added that the administration is looking into the matter.
