PM asks PTCL to provide latest technologies to remote areas

ISLAMABAD- Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has directed Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) to draw up a comprehensive policy for providing Information Technology and telecommunication facilities in remote areas of the country.

“The people at far-flung areas should benefit from these facilities and progress like developed parts of the country,” he stated during a visit to the headquarters of (PTCL).

Emphasising the need of expanding the PTCL’ s optic fibre network to coastal areas of the country, the Prime Minister expressed the hope the state-of-the-art technology would bring telecommunication revolution in the remote areas.

He also directed PTCL to further improve efficiency of its customer services to redress the grievances of consumers at the earliest.

The Prime Minister said the policy of his government was to ensure provision of telecommunication facilities in both urban and rural areas. “This would help them contact their relatives in and out of the country.”

Briefing the Prime Minister, the management said work has already been initiated on a comprehensive plan to provide telecom facilities to both urban and rural areas.

The management informed the Prime Minister of the initiatives taken by the PTCL to promote IT and telecom sector in the country.

The management also briefed the premier about the plan under which optic fibre would be laid in coastal areas of Balochistan.

It said 4.6 million telephone lines have already been installed, out of which 3.9 connections are being utilised. Moreover, a huge network of 2700 exchanges has been established in the country andand 1805 cities and towns have been provided direct dialling facility through this network.

According to the management 100 per cent digitalisation of PTCL network is expected to be completed by June this year as 97 per cent of digitalisation has been achieved.
