Plainclothes policemen in rallies banned

ISLAMABAD: The National Public Safety Commission has imposed a ban on deputation of plainclothes policemen to handle the public in rallies. This was decided in the 18th meeting at the National Police Bureau under the chairmanship of Lt-Gen (retd) Hamid Nawaz Khan, Federal Minister for Interior and the Chairman of NPSC.

During the meeting, the commission asked the provincial police officers to issue directions to district police officers/SSPs that no policeman in plainclothes be deputed to handle public order situations as the practice was adversely affecting the image of the police.

The commission also decided in principle to conduct a research survey to measure the public perceptions of the police. As a first step, an expert shall be associated to assist the commission in preparing questionnaires and working out the budgetary estimates for the exercise.

The commission formed a sub-committee to finalise the draft annual report of the commission within two weeks.

The commission discussed the long delay in the establishment of Federal Police Complaints Authority and requested the interior minister/chairperson NPSC to take up this important issue with the appropriate authorities.
