Photographic exhibition on lives of Sufis

Karachi: An exhibition of 32 photographs, taken in Pakistan by German photojournalist Horst A Friedrichs back in 1998 and 1999, were put on display at the Goethe Institut on Thursday evening.

The exhibit was inaugurated by celebrated German musician, writer and composer Peter Pannke along with the German Consul General Dr Christian Brecht.

Pannke, who has been a regular visitor to Pakistan, has co-authored a book with Friedrichs about the Sufis and their way of life. The book, and subsequently the exhibition, has been titled “Troubadours of Allah”.

Pannke said that it was his project that started in Berlin in 1997 when Friedrichs saw Malangs and Faqirs from Pakistan perform in concerts in Germany.

The book was initially written in German and could not be released in Pakistan. Now, however, the Oxford University Press, Karachi has taken up the project and is currently translating the book into English and fashioning a revised edition with an additional chapter written by Pannke.

Among the photographs on display were scenes from Bhit Shah, Umerkot and Sehwan Shariff. The exhibition will continue till November 20 at the Goethe Institut.
