PFUJ wants parliament to name Pemra chief

KARACHI, April 27: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has accused the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority of suppressing the freedom of expression and pressurising private TV channels through different tactics and demanded a new Pemra set-up with its chairman and members nominated by parliament.

According to a press release, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists demanded appointment of a new chairman of the authority, who should be a retired judge of the Supreme Court, someone with vast media experience and known for integrity and competence or at least someone meeting the criteria set in the Pemra law.

It also demanded that the 12-member Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority board should be nominated by parliament and not by the government.
