PFUJ condemns journalist’s torture

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) is disturbed to learn about an armed attack on a local TV channel correspondent of Jhelum, Amir Shabbir Kayani. Condemning the incident the PFUJ demanded immediate arrest of the culprits, says a press release.

Amir Shabbur Kayani has reportedly prepared a documentary about the sale of drugs in various localities of Jhelum under the alleged patronage of the influential of the area.

After completing the task of the documentary Amir Shabbir just reached his office located in the Mohammadi Chowk where his younger brother Faisal Kayani was also sitting. Five armed persons stormed into the office on Saturday.

The attackers without any provocation mercilessly started beating Amir Shabbir and his younger brother Faisal Kayani. Both were severely tortured. The attackers asked for the documentary purporting to sale of drugs in the area, and on refusal to hand over the same reportedly beat them.

The attackers also damaged the furniture and vital equipment as well as a camera, and managed to escape from the scene leaving Amir and his brother in a critical condition. Condemning the attack the PFUJ called upon the local authorities as well as the Punjab chief minister to bring to justice the accused involved in this incident. The PFUJ urged upon all political parties and civil society actors to honour the established cannons of fair play, freedom of expression and right to know of the citizens and tolerance.
