Pemra under no pressure to disobey court orders

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) chairman has no pressure from the government to disobey court orders, says a press release issued on Sunday.

Apropos a news item published in national dailies ‘The News’ and ‘Jang’ with regards to leave of Pemra chairman Mushtaq Malik, it says, the Jang Group has sadistically linked the issue of leave to its petitions filed in the Supreme Court and the Islamabad High Court. The headlines published in the national dailies are outrageous and depict juvenile journalism of the group, whereby personal reasons of an individual have ironically been liked to the orders of the government, says the press release.

The fact is that Mushtaq Malik had applied for two-month leave genuinely on his personal reasons. During his leave period he may proceed to abroad to settle his family issue. It is worth mentioning here that Mushtaq Malik had availed leaves in the past and had visited his family abroad during the past few months.

It is reiterated that the Pemra chairman had explicitly no pressure at all from the government or the presidency to disobey orders of the Supreme Court and the Islamabad High Court, and pressurising this particular group for the venomous propaganda made through its satellite TV channels. Being the regulator for broadcast media in the country, Mushtaq Malik is committed to uphold the law of land to extend a level-playing field to all the stakeholders in the broadcast media, the press release adds. Furthermore, the Pemra chairman has always obeyed court orders.

The press release says it is therefore reaffirmed that matter of leave may not be linked to the subjudice matters and may not be used as a tool for government bashing. The Jang Group should furthermore not be judgmental and avoid highlighting controversial issues for attaining mere public sympathies, it concludes.
