PEMRA to grant 13 new TV lisences

KARACHI – Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority PEMRA) will grant 13 licences for new private TV channels to Pakistan origin companies.

Speaking at first regional seminar on Electronic Media – Challenges and Prospects, organized by PEMRA on May 18 in Karachi, PEMRA Chairman Muhammad Javed said the Authority would organize workshops and lectures for cable operators for providing knowledge regarding new technology and advancement for their systems.

He condemned pornography and asked cable operators to respect the will of their subscribers.

“We surveyed various universities in the country and discussed with Higher Education Commission to upgrade and revive curriculum of Mass Communication according to new requirements and advancements, which would provide skilled workforce to combat contemporary challenges in media. Pemra will give gold medal on best research paper and scholarship for the university,’ he said.

PEMRA as regularity authority will consider complaints of cable operators and subscribers, he said.

DIG Police Investigation, Muhammad Akbar, spoke of Intellectual Property Rights and said that Pakistan is on fourth position for privacy in the world.

He called for meeting challenges of WTO in 2005.

Chairman, Cable Operating Association, Khalid Sheikh, briefed on problems facing 971 registered cable operators in the country and urged measures for their protection by PEMRA and Police. He demanded declaring cable as industry so that operators have certain facilities.

PEMRA has set up Council of Complaints headed by Nazim F. Haji to consider problems and difficulties of cable operators and subscribers.
